National Confidential Enquiry: Head Injury in Children

The Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries Enquiry into Head Injury in Children will run from 2009-2012 in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

  • A national organisational survey of all Ambulance Service and Acute NHS Trusts to ascertain current policy, protocols and practice in the pre-hospital and hospital management of head injury in children.
  • Collection of core data on children (up to 15 years old) who as a result of a head injury are transferred and/or admitted to hospital between 1 September 2009 and 28 February 2010.Children who die as a result of their injuries will also be included.  Data from the first 72 hours of care (including pre hospital care) will be collected. This data collection will be coordinated by a Local Enquiry Coordinator within each hospital involved in the enquiry.
  • Confidential enquiry panels on a sample of cases, reviewing case notes against recognised standards of care using a case control approach.

The CMACE project will contribute to the evidence base concerning the impact of early management (i.e. in the first 72 hours post injury) on outcomes.
